COMING UP CONFERENCE in Bordeaux : "Antibiotic resistance, a Global Health problem that needs a One Health approach"

Organized by the LTC Incubator EAR (Dr. Itziar Alkorta will be available to arrange meeting in Bordeaux during her stay (March 11, 12) - contact : itzi.alkorta@ehu.es

A conference “Antibiotic resistance, a Global Health problem that needs a One Health approach” will be given by Dr. Itziar Alkorta Calvo co-director of the Incubator LTC-EAR (Environmental Antibiotic Resistance) this coming 12 March at 2:00 PM in Bordeaux.

Antibiotic resistance represents one of the greatest threats to global health but, although the most dramatic consequences are in the hospital setting, the contribution of the environment and the presence of pollutants from agro-livestock, industrial and human activities, in general, are at the origin of the problem. The solution therefore lies in an approach aligned with the principles of the "One Health" vision: human, animal, food, and environmental health.

Dr. Itziar Alkorta (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of the Basque country (UPV/EHU) coordinates with Dr. Hélène Budzinski (EPOC lab, University of Bordeaux) a cross-border research network (Incubator LTC-EAR, Environmental Antibiotic Resistance) that aims to provide holistic solutions to the problem of the increase in infections due to multi-resistant bacteria.

In her conference, Dr. Alkorta will describe the problem of antibiotic resistance from a One Health perspective, giving examples of the different points where this problem arises (hospitals, environment, urban areas, etc.).

She will also present the collaborative proposal between the University of the Basque Country and the University of Bordeaux to find holistic solutions to this problem: Incubator LTC-EAR. Dr. Alkorta will present examples of collaboration from different scientific disciplines (chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, ecology, environment, etc.) that are being accomplished in this research network.

Finally, she will propose the contribution to the solution of antibiotic resistance by opening the collaboration to other disciplines such as Public Health, Economics, Education, etc.

This conference co-organised with the EPOC lab* and included in the activities of the Incubator LTC-EAR is supported by the LTC Sarea program, a formula for collaborations that has been operating since 2015 within the Euskampus-Bordeaux Campus alliance led by the UPV/EHU and UB with the aim of creating an institutional framework to allow research teams from the Basque Country and Bordeaux to work together.
